FN SCAR 16S and 17S Next Gen – New Features, Hydraulic BCG, M-LOK Handguard, Pricing
This video introduces the next-generation FN SCAR 16S and 17S rifles, set to launch at SHOT Show 2026 (0:30-0:56). James Reeves from TFBTV interviews Ben, FN’s Senior Product Manager, who highlights the significant upgrades (1:10).
Key improvements to the SCAR platform include:
Two-piece buffered bolt carrier (2:33): This new design features a hydraulic buffer that significantly reduces felt recoil and impact velocities on moving parts, making the rifle much smoother to shoot (2:51). It also offers modularity, allowing for a reciprocating charging handle if desired (3:36). This change also addresses the “urban legend” of SCAR’s recoil damaging optics (4:23).
Backward compatibility (5:41): The new bolt carrier group and other components like the rear plate and trigger module assembly are interchangeable with legacy SCAR rifles (5:41, 13:07).
Military-driven enhancements (5:57): Many of the upgrades, such as the non-reciprocating charging handle, longer receiver, and M-LOK forearm, were developed through military solicitations and feedback over the past 12 years (6:01).
Updated stock options (7:14): While retaining the iconic “UGG boot” stock silhouette with subtle enhancements like QD mounts and a recontoured cheek rest (7:36), FN now offers an AR-15 buffer tube adapter. This allows users to attach any mil-spec M4-style stock or brace, particularly beneficial for the 15P pistol model (8:02).
Enclosed M-LOK forearm (9:20): Addressing user feedback, the exposed gas block is now enclosed within a slimmer M-LOK forearm, improving ergonomics and allowing for a more forward hand placement (9:33).
True ambidextrous bolt catch and release (10:32): Unlike legacy rifles with only a left-side bolt catch, the new models feature a conveniently located ambidextrous bolt catch and release on both sides, making operation intuitive for all shooters (10:41).
Improved trigger and AR-15 grip compatibility (11:27): The carbine’s single-stage trigger is dramatically improved, and the 20S model features a new two-stage trigger. The A2 grip is replaced with a true AR-15 compatible interface, allowing users to select any AR-15 grip (11:44).
Larger magazine release buttons (12:02): These are extended for easier access, especially when wearing gloves (12:08).
Torx screws (12:50): All external screws are now Torx, making part replacement easier and preventing stripping (12:50).
Despite these numerous upgrades, the next-generation SCAR will be priced comparably to the original legacy models, offering a much stronger value proposition (13:57).
