What Is A Cryptorchid Buck?

Cryptorchid bucks are male deer (bucks) that have one or both of their testicles retained in their abdominal cavity instead of descending into the scrotum. This condition, known as cryptorchidism, can be caused by genetic birth defects or injuries.
Some key characteristics of cryptorchid bucks:
- Abnormal antlers: Due to lower testosterone levels, cryptorchid bucks often have deformed or oversized antlers that retain their velvet year-round.
- Lack of breeding behavior: They typically do not participate in the rut, such as chasing does or marking territory.
- Reduced fertility: Cryptorchid bucks are generally infertile due to the higher temperature in the abdominal cavity, which is not conducive to sperm production.
This condition is relatively rare among deer populations. Hunters and wildlife enthusiasts can identify a cryptorchid buck due to the animal’s distinctive appearance and behavior.
